Shelby Township, MI. May 16, 2019 – Mattress To Go owner Jeff Scheuer announced that his store donated 60 pillows to the Shelby Township, Mich., Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) Old Settlers Post 4659. These pillows were used as gifts for homeless veterans from Detroit who were hosted at a bi-annual gathering at VFW 4659.
“I’m very excited about our most recent donation,” stated Mattress To Go owner Jeff Scheuer. “I’ve previously dealt with Mike Perusich, the past Post Commander of VFW 4659, regarding cell phone donations for the Cell Phones For Soldiers program we support. At one of our meetings I mentioned to him how I wanted to do something to help the homeless veterans in our area and he stated that the post would be hosting some homeless veterans from Detroit for a day of fun and also as a means of assisting them with donations of various necessities. I knew right away we had found the perfect opportunity to make an impact. I explained to Mike the importance of having your own pillow and how this is a large request at shelters, and he agreed to extend to us the honor of helping these veterans. I’m incredibly humbled to be able to assist those who have given us so much.”
“It’s the sharing and caring to those veterans that really have a need to make a turn in their life that’s important,“ stated Mike Perusich. “The idea that the support that Mattress To Go gave them reinforced that people can care and help them. It all went well with everyone, sitting down and playing BINGO, eating food, getting prizes, and their own pillow. There were 42 veterans who came this time. Some had other things to do, like work. You have to understand that the internal support at their home is also very high on the list for these homeless veterans. We give Mattress To Go a hearty THANK YOU for their support.”
The VFW Old Settlers Post 4659 doesn’t ask directly for donations, but some of their support comes from funerals, selling poppies, and their work at Texas Hold’Em events. They maintain a Veterans Relief Fund to assist area veterans in need. They are a 501 (C) (19) charitable organization. Everyone at the Post volunteers their time and skills. The Post has been at their current location in Shelby Township for over 73 years.
